Get Your Yard Ready for Summer with 5 Fun Fence Ideas

The white picket fence is the dream home we've all been told we're supposed to want. That is only one of the many options that are really available to choose from, however. When looking to add privacy to your yard, there are some amazing outdoor designs that can be incorporated into your property.

When you need inspiration, we have found five fence ideas that will have your backyard looking great for summer and the rest of the year.

Explore the Material
You might be surprised to learn that there are all sorts of materials available when building a fence. Your budget will affect the material you choose, though you should also look at the amount of privacy you want and the upkeep required.

Explore a few of the options:WoodWrought ironPVCAluminumBrickHighlight the Entrance
  • Wood: A popular choice, though pricing can vary dramatically.
  • Wrought iron: This material is sturdy, but requires more upkeep.
  • PVC: This is the most affordable option and is easy to maintain, but is not the sturdiest.
  • Aluminum: You get the low maintenance, but you don't get the height and privacy of the other options.
  • Brick: This option is pricy, though you get the privacy and height that you desire.

When you create a faux brick wall or any other type of fence, be sure you highlight the entrance to your property. There should always be some kind of focal point in place, so be sure to draw people towards your front door, back sliding door, or an intricate gate in the backyard.

Consider Heights
Have some fun with the height of the fence as well as the height of the landscaping you choose throughout your yard. For example, if you have a tall fence for privacy, add some tall arborvitae or even add ivy to sprawl across the fence.

Add Seating Areas
If you're going to do a lot of entertaining, be sure you have seating areas for everyone who will attend an event. You don't have to go with a traditional square yard and seating on the inside. Have some of the seating built into the fence and around the general area. If you have a faux brick wall, for example, some of the seating can be made from the brick as well, creating a multi-dimensional look.

Include Lighting
Various types of lighting can be incorporated into your fencing, too. This adds function and aesthetics to your yard. If you enjoy your outdoor space, lighting will allow you to enjoy it through the evening hours as well. Consider LED fixtures, post caps, or even string lights. Be sure you have the electric capabilities, or explore solar lighting and/or lanterns.

Be sure to talk to a contractor about the different ideas you have for a fence. It will make it easier for you to get what you want so your outdoor space is enhanced to the fullest.
